"DANCE"
"My mother was a dancer. Some of my most vivid childhood memories are of her dancing on the beach, striking poses. Years later, I photographed her that way. So my interest in dance precedes my interest in photography, although I remember seeing Barbara Morgan's photographs of Martha Graham when I was young, especially the famous ones of Graham kicking her leg out under that long, full skirt she wore in Letter to the World. When I became aware of who Barbara Morgan was I began looking more closely at those pictures and trying to understand how they were made. Morgan and Graham worked together in the thirties and forties and were friends for sixty years. They created the photographs together in a studio - not in performance. The pictures were stagings of the actual dance. (...)"
